Description

The horned violets (Viola cornuta) from the 'F1 Sorbet XP Autumn Select' blend offer an abundance of small flowers in a warm range of autumnal tones. Petals are dressed in red, yellow, purple, violet, blue, and orange, solid or bicolored, with or without a central macule. A collection that is perfect for brightening gardens and balconies from autumn, and again in late winter, reaching its peak between March and June. These biennial hybrid violets are early, vigorous and floriferous, easy to grow in humus-rich and moist soil, in sun or partial shade.

Belonging to the violet family, Viola cornuta grows wild in the Pyrenees and is a low perennial plant that has given rise to many hybrids. Often crossed with Viola tricolor, their most famous descendants are horticultural pansies. The mix of varieties in 'F1 Sorbet XP Autumn Select' forms a carpet of herbaceous plants of 10 to 15 cm (5.9 in) in height when in flower, with dark green, ovate and crenate persistent leaves, forming a spreading tuft. They are covered with flowers from autumn onwards, in a palette of vibrant and warm colors. Solid or bicolored, with spots or whiskers, they all have a tiny white and bright yellow heart in common. They resemble small pansies but their petals are arranged differently, with the upper two being erect and the other three inclined downward. The plant spreads quite rapidly thanks to its rhizomes and also self-seeds very easily in the garden, not always faithfully.

Horned violets are intended as low bedding plants for borders, but also for pots and balconies, where they can be associated with other spring and summer flowering plants (Forget-me-nots, Dwarf daffodils, Daisies, Primroses, Botanical tulips, summer and autumn asters, etc.). The flowers of horned violets are edible so do not hesitate to decorate your plates with a few, or even add to salads for a touch of color.

Note: Attention, our young bare root plants in mini plugs are professional products designed for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, transplant as soon as possible in pots, flower boxes, or directly into flowerbeds.

Planting and care

Horned violets appreciate a light soil, rich in humus, fresh but well-drained as they fear excess moisture in winter. In heavy soil, add a little sand to improve drainage.

Plant horned violets in a sunny but not scorching site or in light shade.

Very floriferous and with rapid growth, they are greedy plants. Feed them with liquid fertiliser once or twice a week during the growth period. Water regularly but without excess. Remove faded flowers to promote new blooms.
