Description

The  Viola cornuta 'Sorbet® XP Yellow Blue Jump Up', a new hybrid variety of horned violet, produces plants in invariably compact little clumps covered with an abundance of perfectly complementary lavender blue and light yellow bicoloured flowers, enhanced by fine black moustaches. This robust and branching variety is easy to grow and blooms for a very long period. It adds touch of freshness in borders, or on the balcony or terrace.

Belonging to the viola family, the horned violet, Viola cornuta in Latin, grows spontaneously in the Pyrenees and is a low perennial plant that has given rise to many hybrids and cultivars. Often crossed with Viola tricolor, their most famous descendants are garden pansies. The variety 'Sorbet® Yellow Blue Jump Up' is an herbaceous ground-covering plant 15-20 cm (5.9 - 7.9 in) tall when in flower, with dark green, ovate and crenate leaves, forming a spreading tuft that remains decorative even in winter. This generous plant is covered with flowers from spring to autumn, with a break during the summer. Its compound flowers with 5 petals resemble those of small pansies but are arranged differently. The two upper petals are large, upright, a slightly mauve blue, while the other three are inclined downwards, of a bright and light yellow and adorned with short black veins. The plant spreads quite rapidly thanks to its rhizomes and also self-seeds very easily in the garden, not always faithfully.

Horned violets are intended as low bedding, for borders, but also for pots and balconies, where they associate well with other spring and summer flowering plants (Forget-me-nots, Dwarf daffodils, Daisies, Primroses, Botanical tulips, summer and autumn asters). The flowers of horned violets are edible, so don't hesitate to decorate your plates with a few or even to add to salads for a touch of color.

Please note that our young plants in mini-plugs are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible into pots, or directly into flower beds.

Planting and care

Horned violets appreciate a light soil, rich in humus or compost, moist but well-drained as they fear excess moisture in winter. In heavy soil, add some sand and compost to improve drainage.

Plant horned violets in a sunny but not scorching site or under light shade.

Very floriferous and fast-growing, they are hungry plants. Feed them with a liquid fertiliser for containers once or twice a week during the growing season. Water regularly but not excessively. Remove faded flowers to promote new blooms.
