In bloom. Planted in flower pots in September so that they have time to root before the cold weather: in horticultural compost (in shade or partial shade). Watering if necessary.

Description

The bright and pure yellow flowers of the Viola cornuta 'Sorbet Xp F1 Yellow' cover its dark green evergreen foliage for a very long period, in spring and autumn. This biennial with intense coloring, remarkable when combined with blue or purple varieties, produces small vigorous tufts that remain compact over time. It allows for lively borders and cheerful pots or hanging baskets. Cornuta violets appreciate humus-bearing soils and dappled sunlight.

Belonging to the violet family, the horned violet, which grows wild in the Pyrenees, has given rise to numerous hybrids. The 'Sorbet Xp F1 Yellow' variety is a spreading herbaceous plant 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6in) tall when in flower, with dark green, ovate, crenate evergreen leaves that form a spreading tuft. The flowers are pure yellow, discreetly marked with fine black mustaches radiating from the centre They resemble those of small pansies but their petals are arranged differently. The top two are upright, the other three are inclined downwards. The plant spreads quite rapidly thanks to its rootstock and also readily self-seeds in the garden, not always faithfully.

Horned violets are intended for flowering in low beds, borders, as well as pots and containers, where they will be combined with other spring-flowering plants: Forget-me-nots, Dwarf Daffodils, Daisies, Primroses, Botanical Tulips... The flowers of horned violets are edible, so feel free to decorate your plates with one or two flowers, or even add some to your salads to add a touch of colour.

Note: Please note that our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible, in pots, containers or directly in beds.

Planting and care

Horned violets prefer a light, humus-rich soil, which is moist but well-drained as they are sensitive to excess moisture in winter. In heavy soil, add some sand to improve drainage.

Plant horned violets in a sunny location, but not in direct sunlight or under light shade.

Highly flowering and fast-growing, they are greedy plants. Feed them with liquid fertiliser for containers once or twice a week during the growing season. Water regularly, but not excessively. Remove faded flowers to encourage new blooming.
