Very disappointed: the young plants arrived very small and weak, and despite good care, they did not recover properly; one of them produced just a single tiny flower and the others died quite quickly...

Description

The fascinating flowers of Viola wittrockiana 'Ultima Radiance Pink' change depending on the temperature and exposure. The medium-sized flowers are two-tone, in pink and white. The almost fluorescent flowers are further enhanced by a small white and golden heart. These biennial pansies are compact and vigorous. They bloom in abundance in autumn and spring. They are easy to grow in humus-bearing and moist soil, in all exposures.

Garden pansies, sometimes called Swiss giant pansies, are hybrids grouped under Viola x wittrockiana. They belong to the Violaceae family and are most often grown as annuals or biennials, although they are theoretically perennial but short-lived. The variety 'Ultima Radiance F1 Pink' produces ramified plants that quickly form compact tufts, with a slightly spreading habit, 20cm (8in) tall and 20 to 30cm (8 to 12in) wide. They flower in spring and autumn. 'Radiance Pink' pansies bear fully open medium-sized flowers, with a diameter of 4 to 5cm (2in). Invariably pink and white, the two-tone flowers display shades that vary from pale to dark, depending on the temperature and/or exposure. All the petals have a large central area that is white to pale-pink, widely bordered by a more intense pink that is extremely bright. The base of the petals is adorned with a beautiful bright yellow spot from which black "whiskers" radiate. The medium green leaves are elliptical and broadly crenate.

Pansies are wonderful in the garden, but they also work beautifully in a pot on a windowsill to be enjoyed up close. They look perfect alongside primroses, wallflowers, grape hyacinths, and daisies. They even go well with grasses like Japanese sedge for a contemporary effect. Combine them with heucheras and tulips. The blue-green of glaucous fescues also enhances their beauty.

Pansy petals are edible, and their colours will add a unique touch to salads and pastries. For this use, consider growing them just like you would grow your vegetables, in the most natural way possible.

Please be aware that our plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible in pots and containers, or directly in flower beds.

Planting and care

This variety is highly floriferous and has a rapid growth rate. It thrives in a sunny or partially shaded position, and can even tolerate shade in the afternoon in hot climates. It is a nutrient-hungry plant and prefers humus-rich, neutral to acidic, moist and fertile soil. Feed it with a liquid fertiliser for container gardens once or twice a week during the growing season. Water regularly but without excess. Remove faded flowers to encourage new flowering.
