Very nice product, good quality and will last over time. Fairly deep, which is good, I would have preferred a tad wider in terms of the hole diameter. Have a small tool on hand to remove the soil that gets stuck if it's too heavy and compact. No regrets, the price is a bit high, but it's a lifetime purchase that will be passed on, so it justifies it.

A highly practical bulb planter for creating flower beds in spring. Very efficient thanks to its highly serrated and powerful edge with its ultra-resistant blade, it is a very practical tool that minimizes the effort required. Like all its stainless steel tools approved by the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society), this bulb planter is guaranteed for life by Burgon & Ball, but that's no reason not to take care of it, and we advise you to clean it after each use so that it remains just as formidable effective for each new planting preparation!

The Bulb Planter by Burgon & Ball, is the tool you need to plant bulbs with a diameter of no more than 7cm (3in) in your garden. Lightweight but very durable, it is a very handy and efficient tool.

Bulbs are often planted in groups or masses to create dense and colorful patches in the garden. They need to be buried at a specific planting depth, often corresponding to twice the height of the planted bulb or more. This can be a very tedious task, as it requires working close to the ground and involves repetitive movements when filling large flowerbeds and long borders. The bulb planter is the most suitable tool for planting bulbs quickly and accurately, and should be carefully chosen according to the size of the bulbs and the requirements of each gardener. The body of the planter (its head) is used to :

  • extract a carrot of soil to create a hole that will accommodate the bulb
  • place the bulb in this hole, which has a cylindrical shape adapted to bulbs.
  • fill the hole by reintroducing the extracted carrot of soil.

The stainless steel serrated blade of this planter greatly facilitates penetration into the soil, while the cup-shaped tube allows for easy release of the soil plug. The FSC certified wooden handle is compostable, and the metal head is recyclable.

* FSC is an international eco-label guaranteeing that wood comes from sustainably managed forests

Dimensions:

  • Total height of the tool: 29cm (11in)
  • Diameter of the blade: 7cm (3in)

  • Weight: 532 grams

The English have the privilege of being the reference in gardening (if not in cooking). Promesses de Fleurs has chosen the English company Burgon & Ball for the quality of its materials and its soon-to-be three-century-old steel manufacturing methods. The company has been working with steel in Sheffield since 1730, starting with a patent for solid steel sheep shears. The production of garden shears and equipment quickly surpassed that of sheep shears, but the stainless steel tools from Burgon & Ball are officially approved by the Royal Horticultural Society - probably the ultimate reward in the gardening industry.

The steel used for Burgon & Ball tools is alloyed with carbon to give it strength, and with chromium to prevent the appearance of rust. It's a very precise balance that needs to be found between chromium and carbon, different for each part of the tool. For example, the socket, which needs to be strong enough to resist bending, is made of thicker steel with a balanced ratio of chromium to carbon, while the blade of this planter, which requires strength and hardness to withstand bending in the soil, is made with a higher carbon content than chromium.

The heat treatment ensures that the steel has exactly the right hardness for each tool. Too hard and the metal can break or chip, not hard enough and it will bend or lose its sharpness. The thickness of the steel used also depends on the tool. This planter requires a thicker steel thickness than a knife, which can be made of much thinner steel. The thickness of the steel also affects the weight, so it is a balance that the company Burgon & Ball, with its almost 300 years of experience, has validated to ensure that its tools are both effective and enjoyable to use.

Directions for use The Burgon & Ball Bulb Planter with handle greatly facilitates bulb planting. Simply push the bulb planter into the soil to the required depth, using the graduations. Use the handle to twist the planter, the serrated blade greatly facilitates penetration into the soil by removing a plug of earth, and insert your bulb into the hole (pointed end upwards!). Move on to the next hole, and in doing so, the plug of earth from the first hole is pushed out of the planter. Take this plug and put it back into its original hole, above your bulb. Repeat as many times as necessary! To maintain the beautiful appearance of your tool, we recommend cleaning it with a hard brush after each use and storing it away from moisture.
