Description

This pair of columnar apple trees for small spaces brings together the 'Rondo' and 'Rhapsodie' varieties, which are interesting for their small size and narrow habit. Naturally resistant to apple scab, requiring little maintenance, decorative with their flowering and fruiting, these apple trees are ideal for small gardens and container cultivation. Planted near each other, they pollinate each other, ensuring a good fruit production. Their bicolored apples, red and yellow in color, are very pleasant to bite into and can be harvested from late September through October.

This pair consists of:

- x1 'Rondo' Apple Tree: yellow apples marbled with red at ripeness, large in size. Their juicy and crunchy flesh has a well-balanced flavor with sugar and acidity. Harvest takes place in October. These apples are versatile, good eaten raw or cooked.

- x1 'Rhapsodie' Apple Tree: apples colored yellow and orange at ripeness. Their flesh is juicy and crunchy, offering a good balance between tartness and sweetness. Harvest takes place from the end of September. These apples can also be cooked into compote or used in a tart.

The apple tree (Malus domestica) is a native tree in Europe, particularly in France where its presence has been attested since antiquity. Columnar apple trees are selected for their vertical growth, reduced to only their trunk, not exceeding 3m (10ft) in height and 1m (3ft) in width, and without scaffold branches. This unique silhouette makes them perfect for small spaces, whether in the ground, in containers, or large pots. They are also very decorative and create a distinctive atmosphere with their architectural aspect. Additionally, in spring, between March and April, they take on the appearance of long bouquets of flowers. Another advantage of these amazing fruit trees is that they do not require pruning and are resistant to common forms of apple scab.

The fruits of 'Rondo' and 'Rhapsodie' do not store very well, but they can be kept until December if you find them a suitable place: a cool and well-ventilated room where you can store them on shelves or in crates.

Planting and care

Your Columnar Apple tree can be planted in the ground in a very traditional way. Choose a sunny location, the soil can be slightly chalky or acidic but without excess. Dig a planting hole and simultaneously add organic matter (compost, potting soil) and a base fertilizer such as crushed horn. Do not bury the graft collar. Stake and water abundantly the first time, even in winter, even if it rains. Fruit trees are ideally planted between October and March, outside the freezing period. You can add a small handful of wood ash, rich in potash, during winter, this will improve fruiting.

The advantage of columnar fruit trees is that they can be planted in containers for outdoor use. Choose a container of at least 60L. Make sure the container is perforated and provide good drainage by filling the bottom with a thick layer of clay pellets or gravel. In pots, your trees will naturally require more regular watering. In winter, slide your fruit trees into a sheltered place away from the wind and stop watering during freezing periods. Practice surface dressing at least every two years, which involves replacing at least the topsoil with fresh soil and fertilize before flowering, choose a special fertilizer, not too rich in nitrogen.

Monitor possible aphid attacks during the season. Only keep harvested fruits. Apples should be stored stem down, on shelves or in crates. Choose a preferably completely dark, dry, cool place but frost-free.
