Description

The Jalousia® Peach is a self-fertile variety, resistant to diseases and vigorous. It adapts well to all regions and is cold-resistant. This flat and cylindrical peach has a diameter of about 7 cm (3in). Its creamy white flesh is juicy, melting, sweetly perfumed, and deliciously sweet. It ripens at the end of July. The peaches can be stored well on the tree, so the harvest can extend until early September.

The species name "Persica" was given to the peach, which was thought to be native to Persia. In reality, all cultivated forms originate from northern China. Its appearance in Europe occurred in the 6th century and experienced significant development in the 19th century. From there, numerous selections aimed at improving the fruit's taste qualities took place. The Jalousia® Peach is a variety of Chinese origin, improved by the INRA in 1990.

Like many fruit trees, the Jalousia® Peach appreciates light, rich, and deep soils. It does not tolerate excess water or heavy and compact soils well. A sunny location sheltered from the wind will help with fruiting. It is a vigorous tree with an upright habit, indicating a tall trunk tree with numerous vertically growing branches that become pendulous with age. Its deciduous foliage is bright green and gives off a slight almond scent. Its leaves are long, measuring 8 to 15 cm (3 to 6in) in length and 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) in width, with a short petiole. Its pale pink flowering occurs at the end of March. The flowers are hermaphroditic and self-fertile. However, the presence of another peach tree will improve fruiting. The fruiting results in flat and cylindrical peaches, with a diameter of about 7 cm (3in). Its creamy white flesh is juicy, melting, sweetly perfumed, and deliciously sweet. This tree does not require too much maintenance and tolerates pruning well.

Peaches can be enjoyed raw, cooked, sweet, savory, flambéed, glazed, or deglazed. They pair very well with wine and certain meats, such as duck. They can be found in numerous recipes, including jams, compotes, and pastries.

Planting and care

The Jalousia® Peach is preferably planted from October to December. Dig a hole two to three weeks before planting, twice as wide and deep as the pot. On the D-day, place the tree with its pot in a basin of water, in order to moisten the entire root ball by capillarity. Install compost at the bottom of the hole. Place the tree in the hole, fill with soil mixed with potting soil. Gently pack around the base of the fruit tree as you fill, the roots should be in close contact with the soil. The root ball should be completely covered. Water generously.

The Jalousia® Peach has a semi-taproot system. It thrives in fairly deep soils. It also prefers a light and well-draining soil.

Care

Pruning instructions In the following spring after planting, a first formative pruning will be welcome. Keep only the branches that will be the framework of the tree (about 5 branches). The fruit appears on one-year-old branches. The wood that has borne fruit will not reproduce. For the fruiting pruning, prune the branches that have already borne fruit to 2 buds above the future branching. Remove the branches in the center that intersect and shorten the longest ones that extend outward in order to maintain a harmonious silhouette.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
