Description

The Reine Claude de Bavay Plum is a very productive variety of medium vigour with rapid and regular fruiting, not very sensitive to alternating fruiting. It produces large round, yellowish-green fruits, known for their firm, juicy, very sweet and finely perfumed, musky flesh. Harvest takes place in mid-September. The Reine Claude de Bavay Plum is partially self-fertile, producing more when other plum trees are present. It prefers light and well-drained soils and is sensitive to cold. It is not recommended to grow it in the north unless in a sunny and sheltered position. It is resistant to diseases and is an excellent pollinator for other plum varieties.

Plant from Organic Agriculture.

The original area of plum trees is believed to be Syria, not China. During the Roman hegemony over the region, various local fruits including plums were introduced to Rome. The Reine-Claude de Bavay Plum was selected in 1843 in Mechelen. It was dedicated to Mr. de Bavay, director of the Royal Nurseries in Vilvoorde, Brussels, Belgium.

This fruit tree naturally reaches a height of up to 7m (23ft) at maturity. Its free and erect habit is appreciated, and when pruned properly, it is easy to harvest. It prefers full sun or partial shade and grows in any type of rich, moist, deep, sometimes heavy soil, without limestone.
Its slightly hairy leaves are oval, almost oblong, with serrated-dentate edges.
Flowering occurs in mid-March when the tree is completely covered in white flowers that appear on the previous year's branches. They are self-fertile. This variety is a very good pollinator.

Plums can be eaten raw, straight from the tree, in fruit salads, but also in desserts, pastries and as accompaniments to meats and dishes. They can be transformed into preserves or fruit in syrup, and compotes. They are also used to make eau-de-vie.

For transportation reasons, our tallest scions may be pruned before shipment. They are suitable for all common training sizes: cordons, espaliers, goblets, half-standards, and low standards, but not high standards. If you would like more information or advice on the training of your fruit trees, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Planting and care

The easy-to-grow Organic Bavay Reine Claude Plum Tree thrives in all types of light, rich, neutral or acidic soil, moist but not overly wet and preferably not chalky. Ensure good drainage by adding a thin layer of gravel to the planting hole. Dig a hole two to three weeks before planting, twice as wide and deep as the pot. On the day of planting, place the tree with its pot in water, so that the entire root ball is wet. Add compost to the bottom of the hole. Place the tree in the hole and fill it with a mixture of soil and compost. Do not bury the graft union. Firm down the soil around the base. The root ball should be completely covered. Water thoroughly.

You can add a small handful of wood ash, which is rich in potash, during winter to improve fruiting.

Care

Pruning instructions Only prune when strictly necessary as plum trees become susceptible to injuries and therefore diseases. Apply a healing paste to protect cuts. Prune the plum tree for training to shape the tree's framework. In the first year, during winter but outside the freezing period, prune the tree so that it has 4 to 5 outward-facing branches. Pruning for fruiting: after the plum harvest, and outside the freezing period, remove dead wood and fragile branches. Remove any fruits left on the tree and burn them. Remove shoots at the base of the tree.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
Pruning time September to October
Soil moisture Tolerant
Disease resistance Good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
