Description

Juncus effusus 'Spiralis' is an aquatic perennial with a rootstock. It forms clumps of upright or sprawling corkscrew-like stems and has semi-evergreen dark green glossy smooth foliage.

Reaching a medium height of 40 to 50 cm (16 to 20in), the spiral rush produces loose brownish-red spikelets in the heart of summer. It thrives in heavy, moist, marshy soil and is essential at the edges of water features, where it adds a unique touch and an unmatched architectural effect.

It belongs to the family Juncaceae, Juncus effusus, a variety native to Europe, Turkey, the Caucasus, Iran, and Central Asia. It can be found in all temperate regions of the world.

In the wild, rushes grow along wet ditches and are closely associated with shallow, natural, stagnant waters. This rush is suitable for coastal use. It can be used to stabilise banks or, more decoratively, in a water feature or a container on the patio.

Planting and care

Plant the Spreading Clubrush in moist, rich soil, even clay or loamy clay, neutral to acidic. Plant it in partial shade or a sunny location. The Spreading Clubrush should be planted at a depth of 20 cm (8in), with its base submerged up to 10 cm (4in). It will spread through its rootstock over a potentially large area. It can be planted in containers submerged in ponds to prevent it from becoming too invasive.
