Description

The Elymus magellanicus is undoubtedly the grass with the bluest foliage, next to it, the fescues and other blue oats can go get recoloured.

This magnificent evergreen grass forms a stiff clump of linear, flat and narrow leaves, of a unique blue. The thread-like spikes are carried by very slender stems, and are as blue as the rest of the plant.

It is probably in cooler climates and in a rocky or sandy soil, very well-drained, that this plant provides its best display. We grow it alongside other plants with blue foliage, such as Fothergilla 'Blue Shadow', Festuca glauca 'Elijah Blue'.

Planting and care

This plant is not always very easy to cultivate. It dislikes humid winters, as well as overly warm summer nights. Otherwise, it has good cold resistance and often self-seeds spontaneously.
