Beautiful young plant with small flowers that have a fragrance, unfortunately the snails love the leaves !!! What a pity! I prefer this habit compared to hostas, it is unique and not well-known!!! When potted, it blooms better.

This Arthropodium is a lovely, little-known New Zealand mid-shade perennial. From a shrub of long, broad, shiny bluish-green leaves emerge stems bearing numerous small, fragrant, white flowers with yellow, star-shaped stamens. Hardy down to -10°C, it is an excellent substitute for hostas, which it somewhat resembles, in warm climates and in drained to dry soil.

Description

The Arthropodium cirratum, locally known as 'Matapouri Bay', is an adorable New Zealand perennial plant that is not well known but is the ideal alternative to hostas to which it bears some resemblance. This plant can handle heat and dry soil well and produces a beautiful clump of sword-shaped leaves with white, star-shaped flowers in early summer. It's easy to take care of if you plant it in well-drained soil. The Arthropodium cirratum is a herbaceous perennial plant from New Zealand that grows near the sea on rocks, sandy soil, and well-drained soil with morning sun or partial shade. It can grow up to 80cm in height and 60cm in width when it blooms. The leaves are evergreen and have a shiny blue-green colour with parallel veins. The flowers bloom in June on green stems with purple tips and have 6 white petals and tricoloured stamens at their tips. The rhizomes measure 2 to 3 cm in diameter.

For those who live in warm climates and have well-drained soil, Arthropodium cirratum is an excellent choice for coastal or dry gardens, pathways, and under deciduous trees and shrubs. It pairs well in partially shaded areas with euphorbias, lady's mantle, epimediums, and Beschorneria yuccoides. It's also suitable for ground cover with columbines, painted Japanese ferns, or tiny violets.

Planting and care

Arthropodiums are plants from the southern hemisphere and are similar to Anthericum. They grow best in warm, semi-shaded areas with soil rich in sand, humus, and well-drained clay. These plants are ideal for coastal areas. If you live elsewhere, it's best to grow them in a pot and bring them inside during the winter, especially if your conservatory is poorly heated. Arthropodiums require non-chalky, fertile soil that drains well and receives plenty of sunlight or semi-shade.
