Description

The Mulhenbergia capillaris is a magnificent grass with an evergreen foliage of a vaporous appearance. Its exceptional flowering in white to pale pink spikes sometimes turns to shrimp at the end of summer and autumn.

The mulhenbergia capillaris belongs to the poaceae family. It is native to North America where it thrives in dry and sandy meadows. This grass forms a remarkable vegetal composition for two reasons. Firstly, it is an architectural plant due to its imposing size (50 cm (20in) in height and up to 1 meter (3 feet) when flowering) and its rounded and bristly habit with excellent posture. Secondly, it also serves as an accent plant due to the subtlety of its colors close to pastel shades (dark bluish-green with hints of gray for its foliage and pale pink turning to shrimp depending on the soil type for its flowers) and the elegance of its spike-like flowers that are perched along endless stems for long months.

The mulhenbergia is not demanding and can be grown in full sun in well-drained soil, even dry and rocky soil. It actually fears excess humidity. Therefore, pay attention to the quality of your amendment, which may include sand if necessary. We recommend associating it with compact bush plants, ground-cover perennials, and perhaps a collection of dark, almost black bulbs to enhance its beauty and create a contemporary and wild scenography. Place this grass in the background and position buxus, ballota, erigeron, and dwarf oregano in successive spots of color at its base, punctuated by agapanthus, alliums, and ornamental and botanical tulips for a touch of sophistication.

Planting and care

Muhlenbergia capillaris fears only 3 things: excessive humidity, heavy soils, and shaded areas where it quickly withers. In a dry, rocky, poor, and very sunny soil, it can withstand winter temperatures of about -15°C (5°F) or even -20°C (1°F).
