Description

The Achillea millefolium 'Desert Eve Yellow' is a new variety of yarrow from the Desert Eve series, which produces robust, compact, early-flowering, floriferous and brightly coloured plants. It offers large dense umbels of bright yellow flowers, which dominate a fine foliage of dark green, deciduous and fragrant fern. It is also a perfectly hardy perennial, undemanding and frugal, and easy to grow in all areas . It will decorate flowerbeds and containers throughout the summer season, while allowing for beautiful fresh or dried bouquets.

The 'Desert Eve Yellow' yarrow is a deciduous, stoloniferous perennial plant with an upright habit. It belongs to the Asteraceae family. It is a recent cultivar with early, extended and remarkably colourful flowering. The plant will reach approximately 40 cm (16in) in all directions, remaining well bushy.

The remarkably long flowering period extends from May-June to September. The bright yellow hue of the flower heads fades slightly at maturity. These heads, which appear at the tops of the stems, form flattened, slightly rounded and circular corymbs, about 10 cm (4in) in diameter, composed of numerous small flowers tightly packed together, which attract many butterflies. The stem is channelled and villous. The foliage is deciduous or semi-evergreen, a beautiful dark green, aromatic even when dry, and finely divided into strips, giving the leaves a feathery appearance.

The 'Desert Eve' yarrows are well suited for container gardening, to adorn containers throughout the summer season, with very little maintenance required. They will also integrate well in a rock garden, on top of a wall, as a border or on a slope where they will help stabilise and protect against erosion. These stoloniferous plants can be used as ground cover, planted in groups over large areas. They tolerate root competition from trees, which also allows for their use as ground cover on the edge of woodlands. As they are easy to grow and tolerate drought well, they are perfect for dressing the base of shrub roses or bordering a sunny flowerbed. The flowers, when picked before fully opening, are ideal for making bouquets.

Planting and care

If you're thinking of planting Achillea millefolium 'Desert Eve', you can do it any time of the year in pots with at least 5 feet of space between each plant. The plant can grow in any type of soil, even limestone, and can handle both dry and moist conditions, provided the soil drains well. It can even grow in clay soils if they are healthy and improved. While it can tolerate partial shade, it prefers full sun. To help the plant grow better in spring, remove faded flowers and cut back all vegetation at the end of the season. You can divide the shrub in spring as well.

If you are growing this plant in a pot, use good quality potting soil for flowering plants. During summer, water the plant regularly, letting the soil dry a bit between waterings. Use flowering plant fertiliser, such as geranium fertiliser, to improve growth. After growing it in a pot, you can plant this plant in the ground or in a flowerbed in March.
