Description

Brunnera macrophylla or the Giant Forget-me-not, also known as Siberian Bugloss, is a perennial that grows in forests in Eastern Europe and Northwestern Asia. It is cultivated for its delicate flowers reminiscent of forget-me-nots and its groundcover habit that forms a dense carpet of deciduous foliage.

Brunnera macrophylla Silver Wings blooms in March-April and has magnificent blue flowers arranged in paniculate clusters (conical-shaped clusters) at least 20 cm (8in) long. At maturity, it reaches a height of 40cm (16in).

Very hardy to -20°C (1°F), this Siberian bugloss has highly ornamental foliage, marbled with silver and soft green. The heart-shaped leaves can grow up to 15cm (6in) long and have soft hairs. They are highly decorative in pots and in the garden.

It reaches a height of 30cm (12in) at maturity. It is a good border plant and is well-suited for wild gardens or informal perennial flower beds. It pairs well with spring bulbs and other perennials. Ideal for compositions with tulips. The Brunnera macrophylla 'Silver Wings' thrives in cool, partially shaded areas.

Planting and care

Plant Brunnera Silver Wings in a moist, humus-rich and well-drained soil. Place it in the sun or partial shade. Protect it from excessive sunlight and strong winds. The new foliage appears in March along with the flowers. In the middle of summer, cut back the old foliage to accelerate the regeneration of young leaves.
