Description

Very close to Cyperus alternifolius, a native to Madagascar. The stiff stems with triangular cross-section, emerging from the rootstock, bear at their tip a crown of 10 to 20 linear leaves, narrower than those of C. alternifolius, but wider than those of C. papyrus. In late summer, a crown of small white-greenish flowers appears on long pedicels. A beautiful and highly graphic species that adds a lot of character to a small water feature.

Planting and care

This species can only be grown outdoors in the ground during winter in the mildest regions, as the rootstock must never freeze. However, we have successfully cultivated it in a large pot submerged under 20cm (8in) of water for several years, as it is very rare for ice to exceed 15cm (6in) in thickness in our ponds. In this case, the foliage completely disappears in winter, but it regrows without any issues in spring. The very "vigorous" rootstock cannot tolerate being confined for too long in a too small pot, which is why pot cultivation requires dividing the stump and repotting it every 3 years or so.
