Description

This pair of 'Desert Dancers' Delospermas with colourful foliage add a unique touch to a dry rock garden, a large planter on the terrace, the top of a wall or hanging baskets. The 'Desert Dancers' varieties have been selected for their remarkable foliage, which turns red in summer. They are small creeping succulent plants that can spread up to 1m. Their flowering period extends from June to October. They are easy to maintain and relatively frost-resistant, down to -10/-12°C.

The pair consists of:

- x 1 Delosperma Desert Dancers 'Red': bright red flowers, green foliage turning red in the summer.

- x 1 Delosperma Desert Dancers 'Purple': vibrant violet flowers, very dark green foliage turning brown-red to purple in the summer.

The 'Desert Dancers' Delospermas should be planted in well-drained soil in spring, even dry or rocky soil. They thrive in full sun, on walls, rock gardens, and well-exposed slopes. If you experience frost below -10°C, grow them in pots or planters so you can shelter them in winter. Some watering during prolonged dry spells will be appreciated. Each plant can cover 80cm to 1m of ground after 2-3 years of growth. 2 plants can cover an area of about 0.75m² in one season, almost 2m² after 3-4 years of growth.

The 'Desert Dancers' Delospermas are versatile and can be used to enhance rock gardens, walls, pots, or as ground cover in dry gardens. They pair perfectly with other small succulent plants that appreciate the same growing conditions. Combine your plants with Houseleeks, Sedums, Aptenia cordifolia, or Euphorbia myrsinites.

Planting and care

Delosperma 'Desert Dancers' should be planted in the spring or autumn in well-drained, even dry and rocky soil. A mixture of compost and fine gravel will suit. It loves full sun. If you experience frosts below -10/-12 °C, plant it in a pot or container. This way, you can protect it during the winter if necessary.

A sunny and warm location is essential for it to feel comfortable and bloom abundantly. Some watering during prolonged droughts will be welcome. You can remove faded flowers to encourage new ones to bloom. You may need to divide the crown after a few years, depending on its location.

Make sure it does not get covered in dead leaves from nearby trees when they could be at risk of rotting. The plant does not like having its feet in stagnant water.
