Description

Delphinium Pagan Purples is a perennial, spectacular hybrid larkspur, producing densely packed spikes of semi-double flowers in various shades of dark blue, purple, and violet during the summer. Each flower is punctuated by a small brown bee. This perennial variety has the double advantage of flowering for a longer period and being resistant to rust and mildew. Irreplaceable as a backdrop in romantic flower beds, in planters, near the house, or in bouquets, this robust plant thrives in sunny, rich, deep, and well-drained soils.

Delphinium 'Pagan Purples' is part of a hybrid series called 'New Millenium' (also known as 'New Zealand Hybrids'), developed in New Zealand. These plants are the result of eleven years of work and selection. They have denser and larger flowers, a much sturdier stem, better disease resistance, and increased longevity.

'Pagan Purples' is a hybrid obtained through cross-breeding with D. elatum among others. All delphiniums belong to the Ranunculaceae family. It is a herbaceous perennial plant that forms clumps of deeply cut, tender green palmate leaves, with solid flower spikes measuring 1.80 m (6ft) high in summer. The flowering period runs from June to September and is loved by pollinating insects. The semi-double flowers are cup-shaped, fairly large, grouped on tall erect spikes, and display a deep and intense blue-violet colour, visible from afar. This plant requires staking, especially in windy situations. It grows from a woody rhizome that vertically penetrates the soil.

Delphiniums always add volume, height and charm to perennial flower beds. They also make good companions for moss or gallica roses, creating charming and romantic displays. Another beautiful combination can be achieved with soft orange daylilies and baby's breath Rosenschleier. This variety is also suitable for creating borders. Its flowers hold up very well in bouquets.

Note: From March to September, the stems of our delphiniums are pruned short to promote better branching of the rootstock and achieve optimal rooting. This also prevents the stems from breaking during transportation.

Planting and care

Delphinium 'Pagan Purples' is not difficult to grow but still requires some precautions: delphiniums hate heavy and damp or dry and poor soils. The soil that suits them is fertile, rich in humus, non-compact, moist, even in summer, but not excessively wet in winter, sheltered from strong winds. Under these conditions, they will live for many years. Plant them in spring after the last frost. Leave a minimum of two or three shoots on young plants and five to seven on well-established delphiniums. During growth, water once or twice a week and apply liquid fertilizer every two or three weeks. Remove faded flowers by cutting the spikes at the level of the small lateral flowering shoots. Cut back the entire plant to ground level in autumn. Avoid letting the plant go to seed in order to keep it longer, unless you want to sow your own seeds. Don't be disappointed if the resulting delphiniums don't have the same appearance as the parent plant, as delphiniums hybridize very easily. Tip: Dare to go for height with these giant plants that structure and balance volumes in the garden. The tallest ones will add volume and lightness against a dark backdrop of hedges or conifers. Intermediate-sized ones will dress up tall flowerbeds, just like giant dahlias. Look after the vegetation with regular watering. Watch out for slugs.
