I bought a Echeveria Devotion yesterday, but the garden center watered it too much, so it needs a pendulous dry for a few days! Thank you for all your good advice. Dany.

Echeveria 'Devotion' is a perennial succulent plant with a habit of compact rosettes composed of beautiful fleshy and velvety leaves, very nicely coloured, ranging from green with purple edges to intense Bordeaux in full sun. It is a very easy plant to cultivate, requiring only a bright exposure and well-draining soil that remains very dry in winter. Echeverias are graphic indoor plants that are easy to succeed with. In Mediterranean coastal gardens, these plants are perfect in rockeries and dry borders.
Â
Echeverias are succulent perennials of the family Crassulaceae, appreciated for their compact rosettes of very graphic leaves. Originating from semi-desert areas of Texas, Central America, and Mexico, this genus is especially sensitive to excess water, requiring well-drained mineral soil and a very bright exposure. Very drought-resistant, Echeveria thrives with some watering in summer. The plant tolerates little frost (up to -5°C (23°F)) and is mainly grown in pots, which are stored indoors away from frost from the end of autumn. Some privileged areas in the Mediterranean can still accommodate this plant in dry rockeries and slopes.
Echeveria 'Devotion' is a recent horticultural hybrid. It is a succulent perennial plant that forms compact rosettes along short, branched stems that remain inconspicuous and tend to bend under the weight of the foliage. With rapid growth, it reaches only 15cm (6in) in height and up to 20cm (8in) in maximum spread. The leaves are fleshy, thick, rigid, ovate-triangular, broadly rounded, and covered with tiny, very fine hairs. Flowering is very rare and insignificant in this variety.
Â
Plant Echeveria 'Devotion' in rockeries, on well-drained slopes, or at the edge of a bed if your garden is located by the sea, where frost does not exceed -5°C (23°F). You can associate it with creeping Sedums, Felicia amelloides (Cape Aster), Delospermas, and other Lampranthus that appreciate the same conditions. Elsewhere, you can plant it in a nice pot or container, alone or in combination with other varieties of Echeverias and Sempervivums (Houseleeks), for example.

Botanical data
Install Echeveria 'Devotion' in a pot in April or in the ground in May (in our milder regions). It can be planted in full sun or in very bright partial shade, in a well-drained, light, sandy to rocky, fairly dry soil. This succulent does not tolerate frost below -4°C (24.8°F) well, but it can tolerate it better if the substrate is well-drained and remains perfectly dry in winter. However, avoid excessively arid conditions and direct sunlight, especially behind a glass window. Use a very heavy pot, even massive, as the plant significantly increases in weight with age. Use a cultivation substrate for succulent plants that is both draining and not too poor: a mixture of leaf compost, pumice, and peat or coconut fibre. Regular, but moderate watering is necessary throughout the growing season, especially during the summer, where the substrate should be allowed to dry out a little between waterings.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
