This young plant is absolutely stunning! Even more beautiful in person than in photos. To be paired with other daylilies, yellow or salmon, to create a beautiful contrast.

Description

The Night Embers Daylily is a beautiful perennial variety with large double, undulate flowers in a velvety burgundy red, highlighted by a fine pale border and a green and golden base; these wide corollas, slightly fragrant, bloom throughout the summer. Like all daylilies, they only live for one day, which has earned them the lovely name of "daylilies". An excellent perennial, beautiful and truly easy to grow, within reach of all gardeners!

The Hemerocallis genus belongs to the Hemerocallidaceae family. Daylilies are hardy and perennial plants with deciduous or semi-evergreen foliage. 'Night Embers' was bred by Stamile in 1997. The plant will reach a height of 70-75 cm (28-30in) with a spread of 50 cm (20in). The foliage, a beautiful bright green, is thick, linear and more or less evergreen in winter. It forms a generously tufted shrub from which sturdy, ramified floral stems emerge. The flowers continuously bloom from early June to early September. The corollas of this variety measure approximately 12 cm (5in) in diameter. Daylilies are plants with short rhizomes and fleshy roots that live for many years in the garden.

Very easy to grow, these perennials thrive in both shade and sun. Some can be a bit invasive, so don't hesitate to divide the shrub every four or five years after flowering in autumn. The daylily is often called the "perfect perennial plant" due to its vibrant colours and ability to tolerate any type of environment, but also out of lack of modesty. It exudes a beautiful exuberance that blends well with other perennials. Plant 'Night Embers' in your borders or large pots for the terrace; a container of at least 30 cm (12in) depth is required. To accompany daylilies, consider summer-flowering bulbs and the graceful habit of grasses or ericoid asters to lighten your compositions. The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and decorate desserts.

Many varieties have been developed in Japan, where they are very popular. The flowers of these plants come in a wide range of colours and shapes. Over 60,000 cultivars, mostly from gardening enthusiasts' hybridisations, are listed, appreciated, and studied by international Hemerocallis societies.

Planting and care

Hemerocallis love sunny exposures (4 to 5 hours of sun per day is sufficient). Avoid dry or too shady conditions that will reduce flowering. Plant them in fertile, moist, but well-drained soil. Water thoroughly once or twice a week until the appearance of flower buds, and apply liquid fertilizer every two or three weeks. During flowering, watering can be spaced out. Easy to grow, mulch in November or March. Hemerocallis can be prone to rust and root rot in case of high humidity combined with temperatures over 30°C. In periods where the alternation between freezing and thawing is frequent, bacterial rot of stems and leaves can occur. Slugs and snails attack young shoots.
