Description

Heuchera 'Bella Notte' is a new compact, dense, vigorous heuchera with very dark evergreen foliage and vibrant pink flowers. This variety of heuchera has a low habit, with dense rosettes of leaves displaying a beautiful chocolate-brown colour with purple highlights. Over time, it forms an adorable cushion that comes alive throughout the summer with light spikes of flowers; a bright pink that adds extraordinary lightness to bouquets. This particularly elegant variety forms a very attractive ground cover, even in the sun. Its beautiful evergreen foliage will create highly ornamental pots throughout the year.

Heuchera 'Bella Notte' belongs to the saxifrage family. This excellent little garden perennial is a complex horticultural hybrid that possesses the genes of Heuchera villosa, native to the mountains of the eastern United States, as well as those of its cousins, Heuchera micrantha and H. sanguinea. It reaches a height of about 25 cm (10 in) for the foliage and 40 cm (16 in) in width in 4 to 5 years. This heuchera forms a very compact mound of leaves. The foliage is the plant's main asset: its persistent, rounded leaves with lobed laminae begin red-purple. At maturity, they have a very dark colour that is intermediate between brown and purple, and under the effect of the sun, they become almost black. The leaves of this heuchera have strong veins and also have a red-purple underside. The light and airy flowering begins in June and continues until August-September. The flowers, in small bell-shaped blossoms, are almost red when they bloom and become pink, arranged along an almost black, erect stem that rises 45 cm (18 in) high, dominating the cushion of leaves. This plant has a shallow root system.

Heuchera 'Bella Notte' is elegant and very colourful and deserves a prominent place in the garden, bordering a sunny path or in a partially shaded and cool rockery, not far from a walkway to be able to admire it as often as possible. It also adapts very well to container gardening. In a line along a border, this heuchera will add a touch of mystery and poetry to the garden. In shade or partial shade, for example, associate it with hostas, Carex, grasses, and ferns for a wild effect. In a more sunny rockery, place a light mulch at its base to contrast with its beautiful foliage and combine it with Ceratostigma plumbaginoides, with its small bright blue flowers and brilliant autumn foliage. Finally, it makes an ideal ground cover with remarkable colours. Associate this heuchera with the 'Autumn Brides' cultivar or with blue or pink flowers such as forget-me-nots, corydalis, or lungworts. Heuchera is perfect for filling your pots, containers, and large shady planters. A good cut flower, the delicate bells of this plant add a lot of lightness to bouquets.

Planting and care

Prepare a planting hole of 20 cm x 20 cm x 20 cm (8 in x 8 in x 8 in). If your soil is heavy, mix a bit of compost with the crumbled soil, partially fill in and place your bucket (after removing the pot) so that the top of your plant's root ball is covered with 3 cm (1 in) of soil. Adding a base fertiliser (dried blood or crushed horn) will nourish your plant during its rooting period without risk of burning. Firm the soil and water generously to eliminate air pockets. If the weather is dry, you will need to water regularly for a few weeks to encourage the establishment of your plant. Heucheras renew their foliage at the end of winter, so we recommend cutting back the leaves from the previous year in January or February. Hybrid varieties of H. villosa, like Bella Notte, tolerate the combination of heat and humidity better than others. 'Bella Notte' can be placed in shade, partial shade, or in the sun (in soil that remains moist).
