Description

The 'Impressionist' Iris Germanica is a bi-tone bearded Iris in warm colours. It has salmon pink petals and raspberry sepals adorned with orange beards. Its flowers are fragrant. It is a vigorous variety.

Everyone knows Iris Germanica, which has become world-famous thanks to the paintings of Van Gogh and Monet. Its popularity is due to its unique formation.

Its wide, rigid, sword-shaped leaves contrast with ruffled, multicoloured flowers perched up high. The flowers have the particularity of forming three large erect 'standard' petals and three silky and trailing sepals or 'falls', at the top of which sit a fuzzy "beard". The flowering lasts a few weeks in May/June. Irises have large fleshy rhizomes that spread along the ground. They like light, warmth, and light and well-drained soils. Not afraid of cold or summer drought, their main enemy is moisture, especially in heavy soils. They are superb in a sunny flowerbed and highly appreciated for cut flower arrangements.

Very robust, it should be exposed to full sun in relatively dry and well-drained soil.

Place your Impressionist Iris in or at the edge of a flowerbed alongside yarrows, alliums, stipas, or roses. It is preferable to plant them in groups of 3 or on their own rather than creating uniform clumps of irises.

Planting and care

Impressionist irises should be buried shallowly, leaving the rhizome flush with the soil. Add sand if the soil is too heavy or too wet, and place the rhizomes on small mounds. Drain the soil well to prevent the iris from rotting. This iris should be watered 1 or 2 times a month in summer. When they have finished flowering, they should be pruned by cutting the flower stems 10 cm from the ground. Damaged leaves should only be removed in autumn. It is not advisable to add too much nitrogen, as this weakens the plant and increases the number of leaves to the detriment of the flowers. As they grow taller, the flower stems become brittle. Irises can be susceptible to heterosporous, a disease that forms oval, brown spots. Treat irises with a fungicide at the start of vegetation to prevent this. After flowering every four years in summer, divide the clumps by uprooting the whole plant. They should be transplanted to a spot with no irises for a year. Remove the best-looking rhizome plants, generally those around the edges.
