Description

This charming shrub offers the most original of lavenders. Lavandula stoechas Fat Head is covered with violet-purple flower spikes between May and July, topped by beautiful mauve-violet bracts that turn pink at the end of summer. It forms a small, compact, dense and nicely rounded bush, covered with narrow, downy and aromatic leaves with a pine fragrance. Moderately hardy, this plant prefers slightly acidic and well-drained soils and a sunny position. It will thrive in flower beds, borders, and rockeries.

Lavandula stoechas, is a plant native to the western Mediterranean basin. It is an evergreen shrub that flowers in spring on siliceous slopes. Belonging to the Lamiaceae family, this plant is aromatic but not widely used in perfumery due to its resinous perfume. The Fat Head variety is a compact shrub with dense vegetation. Its quadrangular stems bear narrow and downy leaves, grey-green in colour, with fringed edges and a pine fragrance. The plant has a rather spreading habit and rarely exceeds 60 cm (24in) in height at the time of flowering. In spring, a dense, short-stalked, thick and square-shaped spike forms at the end of each stem, bearing tiny violet-purple flowers. This spike is crowned with several large petaloid bracts resembling butterfly wings, which are mauve-violet then fresh pink. It is frequently visited by pollinating insects, especially bees. It is a nectar-bearing and honey-bearing plant.

Unlike most other lavenders, this lavender requires to be planted in a non-calcareous soil. However, it does require full sun and a well-drained (even dry and rocky) soil. In sunny and warm locations, its silver foliage will be vibrant and its flowers will exude an intense fragrance. An ornamental and Mediterranean plant par excellence, lavender can be used in flower beds, as a specimen plant, in borders, rockeries, pots, coastal areas, and even as a low-flowering hedge.

With its floribundity, foliage colour, and violet flowers, the gardener has endless possibilities. Lavandula stoechas can be paired with cotton lavenders, creating a beautiful contrast of colours; placed near a few tufts of rosemary, a labdanum cistus, or a cypress, it will bring a Mediterranean touch to the garden. This lavender can also be grown in pots on the patio or balcony.   It is also possible to combine several lavender varieties together, creating an elegant display with a variety of flower and foliage colours, as well as plants of differing sizes and volume.

Properties: Lavender is a very honey-bearing plant, contributing to the conservation of bees: the nectar of its flower attracts bees, making it one of the most renowned honey flowers.

Anecdote: During Roman times, women who wanted to secretly taste wine (a drink that was forbidden to them) would chew a few sprigs of lavender to perfume their breath and deceive their husbands.

Planting and care

In nature, this lavender always lives in poor, dry, arid, perfectly drained environments. It dislikes summer watering with alkaline water, which makes it sick and causes it to disappear.  It is very sensitive to fungal diseases caused by the combination of heat and moisture. Not very resistant to heavy frost, to -10/-12°C (14/10.4°F), it is advisable to cultivate it as a group on raised ground, in front of a south or west-facing wall, in cooler regions, and in a pot for wintering. It is very well suited to pot cultivation.

In winter, it absolutely needs perfect drainage, and in summer, it needs to be kept dry. This lavender will grow better in poor soil, as its growth will be slower, and it will have less tendency to thin out at the base. To limit this phenomenon, it should be pruned, from a young age, after flowering or in autumn, just above the first buds that can be seen on the wood. Lavenders never 'sprout' on old wood. The clump will therefore become more and more branched, remaining compact, eventually forming beautiful dense cushions. Plant in non-limestone gravel, coarse sand, but absolutely no compost or fertilisers. When pruning after flowering, do not throw away the faded inflorescences, but collect them to make sachets that will delicately perfume wardrobes, and also make excellent moth repellents.  For dried bouquets,  harvest lavender flowers when they have just bloomed and let them dry in a dry and ventilated place, upside down.
