Description

Leucanthemum x superbum 'Real Galaxy' is a recent variety of large daisy, not very tall, but very pleasantly unique. Its strong stems carry double inflorescences, where multiple thin, fringed and slightly curly petals form a thick crown around a golden heart that turns mustard over time. The flowering of this beautiful perennial occurs throughout the summer in damp soil. It is also a variety more resistant to diseases, easy to grow in the sun or in partial shade. Its flowers last a long time in bouquets and in borders.

The genus Leucanthemum belongs to the family of Asteraceae. 'Real Galaxy' is a horticultural hybrid recently obtained in England from Leucanthemum x superbum, the large daisy that we know well. Like all the varieties in the 'Real' series, it is particularly resistant to diseases. It forms a fairly compact tuft from spring, slightly taller than wide, measuring about 55 cm (22in) in height and spreading over 40-45 cm (16-18in), with a moderately rapid growth. Opulent in summer, it almost completely disappears in winter, with only a few rosettes of basal leaves remaining at ground level. The flowering takes place from July to September provided that the faded flowers are regularly removed. It takes the form of large solitary heads with a diameter of 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3in), with very fine and numerous white ligules, assembled in a well-filled and slightly tousled crown around a golden yellow centre. The floral stems are particularly strong and perfect for cutting. The leaves are dark green, simple and alternate with a regularly toothed edge. The plant reaches its full maturity in five years.

This summer daisy, which is very suitable for making bouquets, will be perfect in a border or in a flower meadow, for example under fruit trees or at the back of the garden. Combine its tousled flowering with that of cosmos, or with peonies, baptisias, grasses, or with campanulas for example. Easily create a beautiful scene by sowing annual centaureas and poppies near this lovely 'Real Galaxy' variety.
