The young plant received is in good shape, already well developed. I hope to see it flower soon and that it will tolerate my clay soil.

Description

Nepeta subsessilis 'Sweet Dreams', also known as Catmint and Catnip, forms a dense, erect and branched bush with oval, wide and toothed, light green leaves, topped throughout the summer with large, soft pink flowers. It is a tall Nepeta, fond of moisture and heavy soils. It can be used in the same way as lavender, as a border plant, in flower beds and in large pots.

Nepeta subsessilis 'Sweet Dreams' belongs to the Lamiaceae family. Nepeta subsessilis, from which it originates, is native to Japan, where it is found on the slopes of wet mountains. This perennial forms a dense and bushy clump 70 cm (28in) high, with a spread of at least 30 cm (12in), rapidly spreading by its rhizomes. The flowering period extends from May to July, with a possible second bloom in September. The bright soft pink, nectar-rich flowers, are 3 cm (1in) long, grouped in spikes and loved by bees and butterflies. The medium green leaves are very aromatic when crushed. They are ovate, toothed, hairy, and 8 to 10 cm (3 to 4in) long. It is one of the tallest species and also one of the most tolerant of high atmospheric humidity. Its leaves are attractive to cats.

Easy to grow Nepeta subsessilis 'Sweet Dreams' prefers moist, rich and well-drained soil in a sunny location. It can tolerate dry, poor and rocky soils, but will flower less abundantly. It is not as drought-tolerant as most nepetas. Nepeta subsessilis can be used as a border plant, on large slopes or in containers. It can be paired with tall roses for a romantic touch or with yellow-flowered perennials for contrast. It also pairs well with lobelias and Chelone obliqua.

Fun fact: Catnip acts as a sort of drug on some cats. They rub against the plant for several minutes which makes them happy for up to 2 hours. But don't worry, it is harmless.

Planting and care

Nepeta subsessilis and its hybrids have a greater resistance to moist and clayey soils, and a longer flowering period than lavender. If the clumps are pruned with hedge shears, they will bloom again, more beautifully, in autumn. The only thing they lack is fragrance. Easy to grow in any well-drained soil, even clay, as long as it is not too dry in June and July. In heavy soil, incorporate leaf compost or coarse sand. Nepeta subsessilis 'Sweet Dreams' prefers sunny locations but tolerates partial shade. It can withstand short periods of drought.
