Description

Depending on their origin, evening primroses have very different requirements.

Plant with a taproot, like a dandelion, first forming a rosette of narrow leaves pressed to the ground, transforming into a very loose bushy clump of woody stems at the base, reddish, bearing undulate, narrow, dark green foliage. The superbly fragrant flowering opens during the night and withers in the afternoon. The flowers, initially bright red in buds, open into large sulphur yellow cups that later turn coral apricot red.

Planting and care

The plants we offer are more suitable for moist and porous grounds. Heavy and compact clay soils can be suitable if their structure is improved by mixing gravel into the soil to a depth of about 40cm (16in). If you take care to cut the flower stalks after flowering, the plant will produce new rosette foliage close to the ground, providing good ground cover until the frosts. A plant with a lot of elegance, to be planted in a rocky and well-drained soil, alongside Galega, Thermopsis, Baptisia... Although its lifespan is relatively short, it ensures its longevity through numerous spontaneous sowings in a scree garden.
