Description

Perennial plant forming lovely rosettes of villous leaves, but "catching" dew drops like a lady's mantle. The sturdy stems produce beautiful blue, cup-shaped flowers resembling a poppy. The contrast between the black stems, yellow flowers, and light green foliage is pleasing. We have been cultivating this species in the garden for 15 years.

Planting and care

The only way to reproduce it is either to detach the curious leafy bulbils from the leaf axils and cultivate them or to divide the stumps, which by the way, are robust and grow fairly quickly in cool, shady but well-drained soil that is very rich in humus and free of limestone. Note that an annual mulch of dead leaves decomposing on the spot provides the humus the plant is so fond of. Pretty in the company of Rhododendron, Epimedium, Euphorbia amyg. robbiae.
