Very mixed review, out of the 2 received vine-plants, one is acceptable while the other, on the other hand, is really stunted with a tiny branch! I don't understand how the shipping service allows this kind of young plant to be sent out. I'm not sure if it will be able to recover.

More information

Collection bringing together two lovely versions of the famous Hot Lips shrubby salvia, featuring purple flowers for the first one and pink for the second one. The colour of the flowers varies on the plants with the temperature: they will be either white, completely purple, or a perfectly solid pink, or two-tone depending on the season. They bloom from summer to autumn on small dense bushes, adorned with aromatic foliage. Hardy down to -10°C (14°F), they are robust, water-efficient, and low-maintenance. Stunning in a flower bed, they also make a great impression in a pot on the terrace.

Description

This Collection of 2 Evergreen Shrubby Lips Salvias brings together two lovely varieties that possess a unique presence, both in flower beds and in large pots on the terrace. They have the same characteristics as the famous Hot Lips, but their colours are different and easier to match with many other plants in the garden. Their flowering changes colour depending on the ambient temperature, going from white to bicoloured and then to violet or pure pink. In sunny flower beds they look like bushes covered in confetti for several months. Place these beautiful salvias near a pathway, where you won't miss brushing against their fragrant foliage.

 The collection consists of:

- x 1 Salvia greggii 'Amethyst Lips': highly noticed at Plantarium in 2018, this bush measuring 70cm (28in) in all directions bears white flowers, then white and violet, ending in a deep and solid violet at the end of the season.

- x 1 Salvia microphylla 'Pink Lips':  tall and wide at 80cm (32in), this shrubby sage produces white flowers in spring, then white and pink, and finally a pure pink without any trace of white in September-October.

 Labeled separately.

Salvia microphylla and S.greggi, which are the origin of the varieties in the 'Lips' series, are shrubby species native to the mountains of eastern, western, and southern Mexico, as well as southern Arizona. They are plants that require well-drained soil and tolerate the presence of rocks and limestone in the soil. They have a hardiness of about -10°C (14°F) in almost dry soil in winter.

A woody and well-branched perennial plant, the shrubby sage has a bushy habit often slightly wider than it is tall. The nectar-rich flowering is particularly generous and occurs from May to October depending on the climate, slowing down in summer if the soil is dry. Its autumn flowering is remarkable and only stops when the cold puts an end to it. The small two-lipped flowers emerge from the foliage, grouped in spikes. They measure barely more than 2cm (1in) in length, last only one day, covering the ground with their petals in the evening but will already be replaced the next morning. The foliage is semi-evergreen in winter depending on the temperature. It consists of small oval leaves, 2 to 4cm (1 to 2in) long, with rounded teeth, dark green, thick, and aromatic, slightly sticky, releasing a strong acidic-smelling essential oil with heat.

These Amethyst Lips and Pink Lips sages, which are noticeable from afar, bring life to any flower bed, as well as the terrace, for almost 6 months. The vivacity of their flowering will be enhanced by the silver foliage of shrubby wormwoods, and their combination with autumn asters is fabulous: choose those that require little, such as Aster laevis, Aster turbinellus, or Aster amellus, for example. Gauras, tall sedums (Sedum 'Matrona'), and shrubby potentillas will also compose a charming scene with them.

Planting and care

Plant Lips salvias after spring frosts in cold climates, or in September-October in warm climates. Install them in light, ordinary, porous, rocky soil, even limestone, not too poor to support flowering. The shrubby sage prefers sunny locations or partial shade in hot climates. For abundant flowering, it requires regular watering in autumn and spring if the weather is very dry. In poor soil, incorporate a little well-decomposed compost or leaf mould. Mulch it in winter in the coldest areas, and protect it from the cold as much as possible. Place it in the warmest corner of the garden, in full sun against a south-facing wall, in a rocky or sandy slope, any substrate that does not retain moisture which would be fatal to it in winter. Under these conditions, it can withstand short frosts of around -10/-12°C (14/10.4°F). It thrives in container cultivation, allowing gardeners in more continental climates to store it in an unheated but very bright room during winter.

This sage does not have any specific pests or diseases in our gardens.
