Description

Saxifraga fortunei 'Rubrifolia' is a beautiful plant forming non-stoloniferous rosettes close to the ground. The rounded and dissected leaves, normally bright green in the species, are bronze-green veined with purple in this form. The bright purple-pink stems bear a multitude of small pure white flowers with unequal petals. The flowers bloom for a very long period, mostly from July to October.

We cultivate this magnificent saxifrage among mossy rocks, in the shaded part of our large rockery. It is planted in a mixture of garden clay soil, leaf compost, and a little gravel.

Planting and care

Its cultivation is not the easiest, as it grows naturally on moist rocks covered with moss, near streams. It requires very porous soil, rich in humus, that is always moist but well-draining, and preferably without limestone. Ideally, it should be in the shade. A shaded bank or rockery, or planted in moist soil at the base of bamboo whose roots ensure drainage are situations that suit it perfectly.
