Description

Veronica longifolia Charlotte is a new variety with long spikes of pure white flowers and lovely green foliage, highlighted by a fine white border.

This bushy, upright veronica forms a clump 60cm (24in) tall and 40cm (16in) wide with unique deciduous, linear, 10-12cm (4-5in) long, green leaves edged with white.

Veronica longifolia Charlotte carries long spikes of pure white flowers 60-70cm (24-28in) high for almost 3 months in summer.

Veronica longifolia Charlotte is very hardy and thrives in bright exposures and rich yet light, well-drained soils.

You can use this versatile veronica in wildflower beds with Pennisetums, Stipas, and Panicums, or plant it in a modern, monochrome bed with Eremurus, Carex Frosted Curls, and Opalia roses.

Planting and care

Veronica longifolia is an easy-to-grow perennial that prefers rich and light, slightly alkaline soil. It likes humid atmospheres and being close to water, but needs light soil. It develops and flowers better in the sun. Veronica longifolia can be planted in the garden almost all year round, except during periods of frost and summer drought. Trim the faded flower spikes to promote new flowers. Adding compost at the base of the plant every spring will give it vigour. Avoid using nitrogen-rich fertilisers as they will weaken the vegetation and make its stems more prone to bending. In spring, cut the plant back to the base and fresh foliage will emerge spring.
