More information

This variety is a white-flowered variation of the popular Pierre de Ronsard rose. It is otherwise identical, except that its old-fashioned flowers, adorned with 80 to 100 petals, are milky white, enhanced with ochre and pink highlights. It blooms from May-June until the first frost on beautiful glossy foliage. It is an excellent variety that is resistant to diseases and bears an abundance of blooms. It is ideal for adorning a wall, a fence, or an arch. It received the 1st Climbing Prize and Best of The Best at La Tacita in 2010.

Description

Rosa 'Palais Royal', also known as 'Meiviowit', is a Meilland creation from 2005. It is a natural mutation of the famous and acclaimed 'Pierre de Ronsard' rose. Similar in behaviour to the latter, it differs in the colour of its old-fashioned roses: they are a milky white, enhanced by ochre and pink reflections on their edges, clearly visible during cool and humid periods. This climbing rose produces 4 to 5 waves of flowers between May-June and October-November.

'Meiviowit' reaches a height of 2 to 3m (7 to 10ft) at maturity and can cover an area of 8 to 12m². The foliage is composed of bright green and glossy leaflets, and the plant benefits from excellent disease resistance. The flowering is very perpetual. The blooms are gathered in bouquets of 2 to 5 flowers. They measure 11 to 13cm (4 to 5in) in diameter and are composed of 80 to 100 imbricate petals swirling in quarters. They have a milky white colour with ochre and pink reflections. They give off a slight fruity fragrance.

'Meiviowit' looks wonderful against a facade or on a trellis. Its flowering is more abundant if it is carefully trained. It can also be grown as a bush, in a bed, or as a hedge, and adapts well to planting in large pots. It requires very little maintenance, except for regular watering in summer in case of high heat and prolonged drought. Pair it with a clematis with blue or violet flowers, such as 'Etoile Violette' or 'Blue River' or combine it with another small climbing rose.

Planting and care

Plant in open ground or in a pot in well-tilled soil. Crumble the soil well. Add an amendment like dried blood or dehydrated horn at the bottom of the planting hole. After planting, water generously to remove air pockets. Water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate root growth, especially in dry weather. For beautiful flowering, train the branches as horizontally as possible. Prune perpetual roses at the end of winter. Shorten them if their size bothers you, but do not prune them too much. Remove faded flowers throughout summer to encourage even more abundant flowering.

Roses are often stained or unsightly at the end of summer, but this does not affect their development. These spots are not harmful to the rose and are a natural phenomenon.
