Description

The Summer Sangria Rose Bush produces abundance of double roses, intensely red and slightly scented, throughout the summer season, until October. It is a lively small bush with splendid glossy foliage in dark bronzed green, strongly tinged with red on young shoots. Resistant to diseases, Summer Sangria requires little maintenance. It is at ease in all gardens, but also in a large pot. Without a doubt, this radiant Meilland variety will bring joy to many gardeners, especially those who love red roses. Its flowers are very beautiful in a centrepiece.

The Rosa (x) floribunda Summer Sangria 'Meizilena' is a creation of Meilland's rosarian launched in 2021. 'Floribunda' are cultivars with flowers in clusters, obtained by hybridizing polyantha roses and tea roses. 'Summer Sangria' forms a highly branched, rather erect small bush, about 75 cm (30in) tall. Its sturdy and thorny stems are adorned with very healthy foliage. Its flowering is remarkably long: for 5 to 6 months, it is in bloom. This bush renews its flowers in successive waves, throughout the summer. Rather large for a rose of this type, they measure 9 cm (4in) in diameter. The tightly closed buds open into round and initially turbinate flowers, then fully open into whirling corollas, with a natural appearance. The deciduous foliage is absent in winter.

The floribunda roses allow for the creation of beautiful small hedges, planted mixed along the edge of the terrace or in beds of moderately sized bushes. Combine them with abelias, nandinas, or caryopteris for example. They are also good companions for paniculate phlox and catmints. The modest size and resistance of 'Summer Sangria' make it an interesting variety for all gardens, even small ones, as well as for cultivation in large pots. Its use is versatile, according to each gardener's desires: in a monochrome rose bed, or in the company of white varieties (Marie Pavie, Swanny). It will blend well with light and easy-to-grow plants such as perennial geraniums or asters.

Planting and care

Plant the floribunda rose 'Summer Sangria' from November to March in ordinary, well-prepared and well-drained soil. Roses prefer clayey soils that are rather heavy than light. In soil that is too sandy, compact, or dry in summer, it is preferable to incorporate compost, decomposed manure, or leaf mould at the bottom of the planting hole. However, this rose dreads waterlogged soils in winter. Place it in a sunny position, or at most in partial shade. Roses are hungry plants, so a specific fertiliser will be beneficial at the start of the growing season, and regularly throughout the flowering. To encourage reblooming, regularly remove faded flowers. Floribunda rose varieties are more vigorous and floriferous than large-flowered rose varieties. Therefore, trim the stems to about a quarter of their length (from 4 to 6 buds from the base of the stem) at the end of winter. Always prune above an outward-facing bud, so that the bush can expand and the branches do not become entangled in the center of the branches.
