Description

Cytisus x kewensis is a small creeping bush with a spreading habit. In late spring, it produces a profusion of cream-white flowers with yellow centres.

It is about 30 to 50cm (12 to 20in) tall, spreading up to 1.5m (5ft) or more, with a prostrate habit. It is quite compact with a light appearance. The flexible stems bear narrow, alternate, dark green deciduous leaves, 6 to 10mm (0.2 to 0.4in) long. In May, clusters of papilionaceous flowers appear, gathered in the axils of the leaves. They are cream-white with pale-yellow centres, and about 2cm (1in) in diameter. Prune it after flowering to maintain its distinctive habit.

Easy to grow, Cytisus x kewensis adapts well to any light, poor, well-drained soil, preferably slightly acidic, in a sunny location. Not demanding, it will be satisfied with a severe pruning after flowering to avoid exhausting the plant through fruiting. This also helps to maintain a compact habit that does not become bare at the base. Its lifespan is relatively short, around 5 to 8 years. Cytisus x kewensis is the result of hybridisation between C. ardoinoi and C. multiflorus, hence its abundant flowering.

Cytisus x kewensis pairs well with dwarf conifers, spindle trees, and perennial geraniums, offering beautiful, maintenance-free flower scenes in beds, rockeries, slopes, and wild gardens.

Planting and care

Plant in spring or autumn in any light and well-drained soil, preferably slightly acidic, in a sunny location. Choose its location carefully as it does not like to be moved. Not very demanding, it will be satisfied with a severe pruning after flowering to avoid fruiting, which quickly exhausts the plant. This also helps to maintain a compact habit that does not become bare at the base. If the plant is damaged during a severe winter, cut back any blackened stems to the base. The lifespan is rather short, around 5 years.
