Description

A compact shrub with an upright habit, Camellia sasanqua Fukusutsumi is a fragrant variety with bi-coloured flowers of white edged with lilac.

This variety blooms from October and continues without interruption until December. It forms a 1.50m (5 ft) tall and 1.20m (4 ft) wide bush. It produces large single flowers 5-6cm (2.5 in) in diameter, pinkish-white with a deeper pink edge on the petals and adorned with a heart of golden stamens in the centre.

The elliptical leaves of the camellia are dark green, measuring 5 to 8 cm (2 to 3 in) in length and are evergreen. Hardy down to -12C°, this variety is grown in partial shade, sheltered from cold winds. It prefers acidic, humus-rich, moist and light soil.

Plant Camellia sasanqua Fukusutsumi in an ericaceous bed alongside azaleas, skimmia, Pieris and heathers. Its compact size allows for pot cultivation: place it on a partially shaded terrace and bring the pot indoors as soon as the cold sets in, to enjoy the flowering period for longer.

Planting and care

Camellia sasanqua can be placed in a fairly shady spot sheltered from cold and drying winds. It can be grown in full sun, but the roots need to stay moist. Plant in a humus-rich, acidic, moist and well-drained soil. Do not plant the bush too deeply; the top of the root ball should be covered with 3 cm (1.2 in) of soil. In winter cover it with a 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3 in) thick mulch composed of leaf compost and crushed bark. Beware of late frosts that can damage the flowers and buds. Water during dry periods to prevent the bush dropping flower buds.
