The flowers are very beautiful, unfortunately the packaging was inadequate and almost all the flowers fell into the neck of the package during transportation.

Description

A compact bush with autumn flowering, Camellia sasanqua Showa no Sakae is an early flowering variety that forms a spreading carpet of semi-double, fuchsia pink flowers.

Appreciated for its early flowering, this variety blooms as early as September and produces abundant flowers until December. It forms a bush 1m (3 ft) in height and 90cm (35 in) in width and produces large flowers with crinkled petals, semi-double, fuchsia pink in colour, measuring about 5-6cm (2 in) in diameter.

The elliptical leaves of the camellia are dark green, measuring 5 to 8 cm (2 to 3 in) in length and are evergreen. Hardy down to -12°C, this variety is cultivated in partial shade, sheltered from cold winds. It prefers acidic soils, rich in humus, moist and light.

Plant Camellia sasanqua Showa no Sakae in an ericaceous bed, accompanied by azaleas, pieris and heathers. Its compact size allows for pot cultivation, so place it on a semi-shaded terrace and bring the pot indoors as soon as the cold sets in, to enjoy the flowering for longer.

Planting and care

Camellia sasanqua can be installed in a fairly shady spot, sheltered from cold and drying winds. It can be grown in full sun, but the roots must remain cool. Plant in a moist, humus-rich, acidic and well-drained soil. Do not plant the bush too deeply; the top of the root ball should be covered with 3 cm (1.2 in) of soil. In winter cover it with a 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3 in) thick mulch composed of leaf. Water during dry periods to prevent the bush dropping flower buds.
