More information

An astonishing hybrid of Camellia changii. This is a bush with a dense and upright habit, with evergreen foliage that is dark green, glossy, and leathery. Its bright pink to reddish flowers, single to semi-double, bloom for almost 6 months, from June to January, which is exceptional for a camellia. Plant it in partial shade or not too dense shade, in a well-drained, humus-bearing, moist, and light soil. Its hardiness does not exceed -10 °C: outside mild regions, it should be grown in a container to protect it from the cold during winter.

Description

The Camellia '1001 Summer Nights Jasmine', a hybrid of Camellia changii, is distinguished by its exceptionally long flowering period, from June to January. This Chinese variety captivates with its numerous bright pink to reddish flowers perfectly showcased against its beautiful dark green glossy foliage. The compact habit of this bush is perfectly suited for small gardens and makes for a stunning potted plant on balconies or terraces. Like other camellias, this cultivar thrives in cool partial shade and prefers rich, well-drained, non-limestone soil.

Belonging to the Theaceae family, the Camellia '1001 Summer Nights Jasmine' is a hybrid cultivar selected in China by Palm Eco-town Development Co., Ltd. It carries the genes of Camellia changii (synonym Camellia azalea), native to subtropical regions of China, particularly Guangdong. This botanical species grows in dense and humid undergrowth. It is characterised by bright red flowers, a flowering period that can span almost the entire year, and shiny dark green evergreen leaves. It is appreciated for its beauty and its ability to bloom in shaded conditions. This wonderful camellia has passed on some of these qualities to '1001 Summer Nights Jasmine'.

The Camellia '1001 Summer Nights Jasmine' has a dense and upright habit. The bush reaches approximately 1.50 m in height and 1 m in spread after 10 years of cultivation. Its single to semi-double flowers appear from June and continue until January, offering abundant and continuous flowering for over six months. The dark green, glossy, and leathery foliage complements their bright pink to reddish colour. This variety is hardy down to -10°C once well established. Like other cold-sensitive camellias, it can be grown in pots and stored indoors during winter in a bright, minimally heated space, but protected from frost.

The Camellia '1001 Summer Nights Jasmine' thrives in mild and humid climates. This compact and extremely floriferous bush is perfect for bringing life to small gardens, balconies, and patios. It pairs well with small Rhododendrons like 'Bloombux', the Japanese Azalea 'Melle', Pieris japonica 'Passion', and Skimmia 'Fragrant Cloud'. When combined with these plants, it can create a year-round flower bed. In a pot, it adds a beautiful touch of colour and greenery to outdoor spaces.

Planting and care

The Camellia '1001 Summer Nights Jasmine' should be planted in partial shade or shade, protected from direct sunlight and in a sheltered location from strong winds. Plant it in a cool, humus-bearing, acidic and well-drained soil. This bush cannot tolerate limestone, drought, or heatwaves. The bush should not be planted too deeply, with the top of the root ball covered by 3 cm. In winter, cover it with a 5 to 7 cm thick mulch composed of leaf compost and shredded bark. During dry periods, water the bush with non-limestone water to prevent the dropping of flower buds. It is recommended to plant the camellia in autumn to promote good root development and better flowering in the first year. Possible diseases include chlorosis caused by the presence of limestone in the soil, brown spots caused by sunburn on south-facing leaves, sooty mould, scale insects, and weevils.

Camellias tolerate container cultivation well, their root system forms a dense but not extensive network of root hairs. Repotting annually in a slightly larger pot is sufficient. Regularly feed your potted camellia and water it with soft, non-limestone water. If the water in your region is limestone-rich, add one teaspoon of sequestrene to the water every 3 months, from spring to autumn.

Pruning is not necessary, it should be done if needed just after flowering, before the emergence of new spring shoots, and sparingly. Most camellia hybrids do not recover from severe pruning.
