Description
Crinodendron hookerianum is an evergreen bush, hardy down to -8C° (17.6°F), with curious pendulous, cherry-red, lantern-shaped flowers, which earn it the name lantern tree. Cultivated in a pot or in the back of a border, this bush will bring a unique touch.

Originating from Chile, this upright, bushy shrub can reach 8 to 9m (26 to 30ft) in height in the wild, but in our gardens it will not exceed 4m (13ft) in height and 3m (10ft) in spread. It has persistent, dark green, slender leaves measuring 5 to 7cm (2 to 3in) long. The lantern tree offers axillary, pendulous, fusiform bell-shaped flowers in cherry- red, with fleshy petals. Its remarkable flowering, which lasts from May to September, begins on plants at least 5 years old.
Hardy down to -8C° (17.6°F), Crinodendron hookerianum requires protection from cool winds and sun exposure. Plant it in semi-shade, in rich, acidic, and moist soil, in the back of a border, against a west-facing wall or in a container.

Crinodendron hookerianum likes high humidity and will thrive in cool places where the ambient atmosphere remains moist. It is advisable to mulch the base in order to protect the bush from the cold in winter.
