This young plant arrived with naked branches, no leaves at all on the branches, just a few leaves at the end of each branch. It was planted and watered carefully, but there has been no change in the bush's naked appearance.

Description

Daphne x burkwoodii 'Somerset' is a small deciduous or semi-evergreen bush. In spring, it produces an abundance of intense pink spring flowers. It will become an essential component in flower gardens, whether planted individually or in groups.

Daphne x burkwoodii 'Somerset' has a rounded bushy habit reaching 1 to 1.5m (3 to 5ft) in height and spread. It has lanceolate leaves of a deep and satin green colour, clustered at the ends of the stems. During May, it is adorned with clusters of intense pink scented flowers with pale pink lobes. Easy to grow, this vigorous young plant will flower abundantly in the shaded corners of your garden.

A slow-growing bush, Daphne x burkwoodii 'Somerset' will thrive in light, moist, rich, slightly acidic, and well-drained soil.

This variety is the result of hybridisation between Daphne cneorum and Daphne caucasica, obtained in the early 20th century.

Note: Daphnes are sometimes capricious plants, whose cultivation can be delicate if the conditions are not adequate. They are reserved for experienced gardeners.

Planting and care

Plant in spring in cool, humus-bearing and well-drained soil, which is slightly calcareous to acidic. It prefers a semi-shaded exposure. Pruning is unnecessary except for removing dead branches. Do not let the soil dry out. Apply organic mulch or plant heathers to protect the base. Just like Daphne odora, it can be affected by the Marssonina virus.
