The bush has withstood the cold (-10°C (14°F)) very well. I'm looking forward to seeing the flowers. Very pleased.

Description

Escallonia Red Carpet is a ground cover bush, smaller than the species, it does not exceed 80cm (31.5 in) in height, its trumpet-shaped flowers are a beautiful ruby red and they bloom continuously throughout the summer.

Originally from South America, this hardy bush can withstand temperatures as low as -10°C (14 °F), forming a compact and well-branched bush. Its small evergreen leaves, 4cm (1.6 in) in length, are leathery, shiny green, ovate and alternate. The trumpet-shaped summer flowering forms small ruby-red clusters.

The Escallonia Red Carpet grows in well-drained, moist, preferably slightly acidic or neutral soil, in a sunny and warm location. It tolerates sea spray but not cold winter winds. Prune to balance the shape in February and September. Mulch the base in winter.

The easy-to-grow Escallonia Red Carpet is often used in flower beds or in pots on a terrace, along with Gaura, Ciste or Phlox.

Planting and care

Escallonia Red Carpet is best planted in the spring in well-drained, moist soil, preferably slightly acidic or neutral, in a sunny and warm location. It can tolerate sea spray but not cold winter winds. Apply rose fertilizer in the spring. Prune to maintain a balanced shape in February and September and mulch the base in winter. It is sensitive to heavy and chalky soils and does not like stagnant moisture, especially in winter. If the soil is too chalky, it may suffer from chlorosis. Very easy to cultivate, prune to one-third of the height in the first few years during their establishment to encourage compact and dense growth. It can be pruned into a ball shape. In colder regions, plant it in a protected location, south-facing against a wall or west-facing at the back of a flower bed or in a hedge.
