Description

Forsythia intermedia 'Lynwood' is an old hybrid variety, still very popular today thanks to its beautiful vigor, hardiness, and abundance of flowers. This easy-to-grow shrub carries a mass of bright yellow flowers along its upright branches, dazzling like the first sun after the long winter.  A solid and tolerant forsythia, there are plenty of good reasons to adopt it!

Forsythia x intermedia 'Lynwood' is a charming deciduous bush belonging to the olive family. It descends from a spontaneous hybrid of two species native to China, Forsythia suspensa and Forsythia viridissima. The 'Lynwood' cultivar was obtained in Northern Ireland in 1935. It will reach 2.5 m (8 ft 2 in) in all directions at maturity, initially showing a rounded, upright and well-branched bushy habit, and a very dense vegetation. Like other forsythias, it provides a true spring spectacle in March, literally covering its naked branches with numerous small bell-shaped flowers with bright yellow petals and stamens. The flowering is followed by the appearance of deciduous foliage. Its long pointed leaves, 8 to 10 cm (3.1 to 3.9 in) long, are finely serrated and have a beautiful glossy dark green colour.

The 'Lynwood' Forsythia is perfectly hardy and very easy to maintain.  It grows in all types of soil and under most climates. It can be grown both as a specimen plant and in groups in borders, including with Abelia grandiflora, Smoke Bush, or with Mahonia or Mock Orange. It can be used in flowering hedges as its branching is quite low. You can also train it against a wall. Its flowers can be cut. In early December, cut a branch or two and put them in a vase, they will bloom for Christmas.

Planting and care

The Forsythia intermedia Lyngold enjoys a sunny position as well as partial shade. Place it in any ordinary, even clay or limestone soil, that is sufficiently deep and not too compact.  After flowering, remove half or two-thirds of the height of the flowering branches to rejuvenate the bush and ensure good flowering in the following spring. During the first three years, a simple removal of dead, thin or misplaced stems will be sufficient.
