Description

Hydrangea macrophylla Big Data® Pink is a new Japanese introduction with large and beautiful tender and bright pink inflorescences in very dense balls, where dentate and undulate pretty florets are tightly packed. Magnificent bright green foliage adorns the strong stems of this compact bush. It has a dense and upright habit. A beautiful shrub for a romantic garden. You can bring its beautiful flowers into the house in dried or fresh bouquets. This modest-sized variety also lends itself well to container cultivation.

Hydrangea macrophylla Big Data® Pink is a recent Japanese creation. This hardy shrub belongs to the Hydrangeaceae family, native to China and Japan. Its habit is compact and bushy, reaching about 1.2m (4ft) in all directions. The branches are sturdy. It flowers from July to August-September. Its large spherical inflorescences are particularly abundant. They are composed of sterile, single florets with dentate and undulate petals. In acidic soil, the flowers will have more mauve hues; in neutral soil, they will have a slightly pinker colour. The flowering extends over large and glossy, deciduous foliage. The leaves are opposite, reaching a minimum length of about 20cm (8in). They are simple, ovate to elliptical, ending in a pointed tip, and coarsely toothed like a saw. Hydrangeas can live for at least 50 years.

This variety is a compact plant, with a solid appearance even in its durable inflorescences. Hydrangeas are well known for brightening up the north side of houses. This one will thrive in a non-burning east or west exposure, in flower beds as well as in hedges. This modest-sized variety is particularly suitable for container cultivation, which can be placed on a terrace in a beautiful pot, or near an entrance. Although these plants dislike lime, they are not strictly speaking acid-loving plants. Pair them with bush fuchsias or annual impatiens, or plant spring-flowering bulbs in front of their round silhouette. Enjoy their sumptuous flowering in the garden or indoors for a long time.

Planting and care

Plant in spring or early autumn, preferably in a slightly shaded position, for example against an east-facing wall or even north-facing. In very cold regions, it may be prudent to overwinter it in a cold greenhouse or conservatory. Protect it from cold, drying winds. It does not require ericaceous soil, but appreciates deep, moist but well-drained, fairly fertile soil, possibly enriched with a good base fertiliser before planting. If planting near a wall and the soil is dry at its base, place the root ball at least 30 to 40cm (12 to 16in) away from it and incorporate a quantity of well-decomposed compost to better retain moisture in the soil. Very hardy, it can be planted in cold regions without concern.

As for pruning, remove the faded flowers on the first bud or on the pair of buds directly below. When the plant is mature, prune the older stems back to the base by a quarter or a third. This will encourage the formation of young shoots. Carry out this pruning every year during March and April.
