Description

The Hydrangea macrophylla Magical Jade is a compact bush suitable for small gardens or as a pot plant.

From July to November, the tiny flowers form green-white coloured pompons. This hydrangea is part of the Magical series, which has the characteristic of changing colour as the seasons pass. Its delightful pompons will turn blush pink with a red border on the flowers. Cut, these flowers will make beautiful bouquets.

The flowering is accompanied by a dark green foliage. The foliage is deciduous. The Hydrangea Magical Jade has excellent hardiness. At maturity, it can reach 1.5 m (4 ft 11 in) in height with a width of 75 cm (29.5 in). Hydrangeas are well known for brightening up the north side of houses. You can grow them in flowerbeds as well as in hedges.

Planting and care

To plant Hydrangea macrophylla, choose spring or early autumn for the best results. The plant prefers slightly shaded areas like those near an east-facing or northern wall. Be sure to shield it from cold, drying winds. Although it doesn't need ericaceous soil, hydrangeas thrive in deep, cool, and fertile soil. Consider enriching the soil with a good base fertiliser before planting.

If the soil is dry near the base of the wall, plant the root ball at least 30-40 cm (11.8-15.7 in) away from it. Adding well-rotted compost will help retain coolness in the soil. Hydrangeas are very hardy and can withstand cold climates.

Pruning hydrangeas involves removing faded flowers on the first bud or a pair of buds below. Cut back a quarter or a third of the oldest stems to promote young shoots. This pruning should be done annually in March or April. Guide the young stems to distribute them, and they will naturally cling to a support.
