Description

```html
The Nandina domestica Pretty Flamingo® is a variety of Sacred Bamboo among the most compact cultivars. Its superb delicate foliage is particularly colourful: young shoots appear in vibrant tones of pink and coral, then gradually transition to green with a touch of cream variegation. In autumn and winter, the foliage takes on a rich red hue. Needless to say, the garden interest is brilliantly renewed throughout the year. It forms a small ball-shaped bush with an almost feathery appearance. Versatile, accommodating, and highly graphic, this small evergreen bush finds its place in flower beds, as a standalone, in large borders, and will be enhanced in a large pot on the terrace.
The Pretty Flamingo Sacred Bamboo belongs to the berberidaceae family. This bush is a horticultural selection of Nandina domestica originating from India, China, and Japan. Its growth is rather slow, and its adult size will only reach about 50 cm in height and 50 cm in width. This plant forms several upright and ramified stems from its rhizomatous stump. They resemble bamboo stems and are adorned with leaves cut into long, narrow, and pointed leaflets. Its vegetation is dense, compact, and beautifully rounded. The plant is beautiful all year round. In June-July, it eventually produces conical panicles of cream-white flowers. If the summer is long and warm enough, they are followed by dense clusters carrying many very decorative bright red fruits. It is advisable to plant another Sacred Bamboo nearby to obtain fruits, as the plant is not self-fertile. The fruits persist on the branches for a long time in winter.
The Nandina domestica Pretty Flamingo is decorative enough to stand alone in a large pot. In the garden, it attracts attention along borders, along a pathway, or at the forefront of flower beds. It can be associated with Mexican orange, Japanese spireas, Euphorbia griffithii 'Fire Glow', Isalia ground cover roses, or daylilies for example. Each of these scenes will be a success. This small bush, in a large pot on the terrace, thrives in a non-scorching exposure and with regular watering. In a large border, it can be accompanied for instance by Lespedeza thunbergii and dwarf abelias.
Planting and care
Plant Pretty Flamingo Sacred Bamboo in soft, deep, well-drained soil, even slightly chalky, moist to occasionally dry. Once well established, this plant copes perfectly with summer drought if the soil is deep. It prefers sunny, non-burning situations, or partial shade, but can also grow under the cover of sparsely wooded areas. Avoid drying winds and reserve a sheltered location from severe cold. This bush is hardy down to -15°C in optimal conditions, so it will be useful to protect its base with a thick mulch of dead leaves before winter in the coldest regions. If the aboveground part were to freeze, the plant should be pruned back to ground level in February-March. Pruning is limited to removing dead wood and excessive or weak branches in winter.
