Description

Syringa meyeri 'Little Rosie' is appreciated for its small size and its generous bright pink flowering. It forms a bushy and upright, compact shrub. Its dark green leaves turn yellow in autumn. In May-June and again in late summer, it is covered with clusters of remarkably fragrant and nectar-rich flowers. Perfect for small gardens, 'Little Rosie' lilac can also be grown in a pot on the terrace or balcony. It is a very hardy plant that requires little care, ideal for beginner gardeners.

From the Oleaceae family, Syringa meyeri is native to northern and western China, although it has never been found in the wild. 'Little Rosie' is a Dutch creation by André van Vijnatten dating back to 2008. However, it has only been on the market for a very short time. It is distinguished by its slower growth and reduced development. This lilac naturally forms an upright, well-branched bush, reaching 1 to 1.25 m in all directions. This variety blooms from a young age, and generously in May-June, or even as early as April depending on the region. Its inflorescences, composed of small single flowers, are dark pink and grouped in clusters at the ends of the previous year's shoots. Following this first flowering, clusters bloom again more sporadically throughout the summer and into autumn, at the ends of the current year's branches. Its fragrant flowering attracts butterflies and pollinating insects. Its dark green leaves measure 4 to 5 cm long and 2 to 3 cm wide. They turn yellow in autumn before falling.

This small lilac is perfectly hardy and easy to grow, adapting to all styles of gardens and terraces. It also grows well in a pot. Place it near a passageway to enjoy its powerful spring fragrance. It will work well in a flowerbed alongside other spring-flowering shrubs such as 'Jet Trail' Japanese quince with white flowers and 'Perle Rose' Deutzia with pink-tinted flowers. Its deliciously fragrant flower clusters are lovely in bouquets, combined with Garden Iris and Peonies.

Planting and care

Syringa meyeri 'Little Rosie' tolerates any ordinary soil, with a preference for rich, well-drained, deep, loose, and not too dry soils. You can apply a complete fertiliser every year at the start of growth. Plant your lilac in full sun, or light shade in a warm climate. Its flowering is better when it receives maximum light and when winters are well contrasted. It is a hardy plant that requires little care. Remove faded inflorescences after flowering to avoid fruiting, which is uninteresting and depletes the plant. This will promote a late summer regrowth and a more abundant flowering the following year. Pruning is not essential on this naturally compact variety. If necessary, prune within 1 to 2 months following flowering to allow your lilac to produce new shoots during the summer.
