Calycanthus or sweetshrub is the ideal bush for areas of the garden where the soil is rich, moist, and sunny. Its remarkable flowers, shaped like small water lilies with a diameter of 4 cm (2in), bloom in summer. Despite its hardiness down to -19 °C (-2.2°F), this shrub needs to be protected from cold winds. Calycanthus floridus releases the fragrance of strawberries from its flowers and a scent of camphor from its leaves when crushed. An adult Calycanthus does not exceed 2m (6.5ft) and is used as an individual specimen and in groups.
