The plants on this site are of very good quality. I did get a flower as expected about 1 month after planting, but I don't like its design. The stem is very tall (enormous), there are no leaves, and the flower is not very beautiful. This experiment with a modern amaryllis doesn't suit me, I prefer more traditional amaryllis. It's just a matter of taste because the plant has grown well, but I regret my purchase and will now look into other bulbs.

Description

The Amaryllis Chico is part of the amaryllis cybister category. It has a spectacular flowering from December to March that gives it an exotic appearance.

Its extravagant flowers resemble a tropical bird with their star-shaped form. They have long, narrow petals measuring 10 cm (4in). The flowers are red with shades of green towards the tips, with the lower petal completely green. In the heart of the flower are long stamens that sometimes exceed the petals. 4 to 6 flowers are perched on sturdy stems.

The amaryllis chico, also known as hippeastrum, develops its foliage after flowering. This indoor bulb can reach 50 cm (20in). Cultivate it in a pot. You can also place it against a well-exposed wall in your garden, sheltered from cold winds, knowing that the amaryllis cannot tolerate frost. Cut, the flowers make beautiful bouquets. The amaryllis chico is native to the Andes of Bolivia and the extreme north of Argentina.

Planting and care

The Chico Amaryllis thrives in full sun or partial shade in any moist soil. Indoors, place it in bright light. For pot cultivation, allow for 2 cm (1in) around the bulb and use a heavy pot to prevent it from tipping under the weight of the amaryllis, which tends to lean towards the sun. Use a light, well-draining, neutral or slightly acidic potting soil. In a pot, leave half of the bulb above the soil to prevent the neck from getting wet during watering and rotting. Additionally, this provides more room for the soil. Plant your amaryllis bulbs from October to January, depending on the desired flowering period, keeping in mind that it takes 6 weeks between planting and flowering. After flowering, cut off the flowers and let the foliage continue to grow. At the end of summer, allow the soil to dry out and trim off the dry leaves. 6 weeks later, repot the bulb in fresh potting soil.
