Description

A lovely white scented flower, with a small yellow crown edged in red, nicknamed the poets' daffodil, this botanical daffodil can still be found in Alpine meadows.

Daffodils are the hardiest bulbs planted in autumn. They tolerate both full sun and partial shade. They prefer well-drained soil but can also thrive in heavy soil.

For bouquets: We advise against mixing daffodils with other flowers, tulips in particular, as the stems of daffodils contain a substance that causes other flowers to wilt quickly. This detrimental effect on other flower species can be attenuated by dipping the ends of the daffodil stems in warm water for 1 to 2 minutes.

Daffodils come back every year. Unlike perennial plants, there is no need to feed before flowering. Only cut the leaves when they have turned yellow and apply fertiliser at this time, as this is when the bulb replenishes itself and prepares for the following year's flowers.

Planting and care

Daffodils bloom from March to May and come back every year. They are easy to grow and thrive both in the shade of a woodland and a sunny flower bed. Plant them 10 cm (4in) deep and 10 cm (4in) apart, in sets of at least 5 bulbs, in patches of uniform or mixed colours. To plant them in a lawn: remove a patch of turf, dig and loosen the soil to a depth of at least 20 cm (8in) (the height of a spade), place your bulbs, cover them with soil and replace the turf. Choose a spot where you won't mow too early, as you must let the daffodil leaves wither before cutting them. This is when the bulb replenishes itself and prepares the flowers for the following year. Cut the flowers as soon as they fade to prevent seed formation, which would unnecessarily exhaust the bulb.
