Description

Narcissus cyclamineus 'Trena' is a mini-daffodil with bicoloured flowers. The petals face slightly backwards. They are cream-white with a lemon-yellow trumpet in the centre. Despite its small size (about 20cm (8in)), it is impossible to miss it.

This daffodil is particularly early. It precedes spring, rather than accompanies it. It is completely hardy, floriferous, and productive. It quickly produces new bulbs.

You can plant 'Trena' wherever you like: at the base of bushes, in rockeries, in flower beds, and even in pots and planters.

To tell the difference between a narcissus and a daffodil, look at the size of the trumpet: if it is as big or bigger than the wide flower, then it is a daffodil. However, daffodils are part of the Narcissus genus. In any case, daffodil or not, you are dealing with a narcissus.

This gorgeous daffodil has received the prestigious Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society.

Planting and care

Narcissus cyclamineus 'Trena' flowers in March, sometimes even at the end of February. It comes back every year. The bulbs are very easy to grow and can thrive in the shade of a woodland or in a sunny flower bed. Plant them at a depth of 10cm (4in) and spaced 10cm (4in) apart. Group them in clusters of at least 5 bulbs, in uniform colours or mixed.

You can plant them in lawns. In this case, lift the turf, and dig and loosen the soil to a depth of at least 20cm (8in) (the length of a spade). Plant your bulbs, cover with soil, and replace the turf. Choose a spot where you won't mow, as the daffodil leaves must wither before cutting them. The bulb uses the leaves to rebuild itself and prepare the flowers for the following year. However, cut the flowers as soon as they fade to avoid seed formation, which would unnecessarily exhaust the bulb.

Every three or four years, dig them up between August and September to separate the old bulbs from the new ones, so you can propagate them in the garden or use them in pots and containers.
