Description

Narcissus 'Camelot' is an herbaceous plant. It blooms from April to June, producing beautiful tubular and solitary yellow flowers. They are perched on long stems. These flowers emit a slight fragrance. Its green foliage is deciduous. The leaves are sword-shaped, with entire edges.

Daffodils are increasingly popular today because they are synonymous with spring. This 'Camelot' variety reaches a height of 35cm (14in) when fully grown. Originally from the Mediterranean basin, the large-crowned daffodil can be found in flower beds, lawns, rockeries, and in pots. Its blooms can be placed in a vase, but it is best not to mix them with other flowers.

Daffodils are toxic. They do not tolerate inclement weather such as rain, which damages the flower. Nevertheless, they are among the most resilient autumn bulbs. They are a faithful plant that returns every year.

Daffodils come from a Greek legend in which a handsome young man rejected the love of the nymph Echo. As a punishment, the gods made him love nothing more than his own reflection. When he perched above a fountain to drink, Narcissus saw his reflection and remained in contemplation of it until he drowned. He then transformed into a flower.

Planting and care

Place in full sun or partial shade. Very easy to grow, they can tolerate both the shade of woodland and a sunny flower bed. They prefer moist but well-drained soils. Plant them in autumn, at a depth of 15cm (6in) and spaced 10cm (4in) apart. Group them in clusters of at least 5 bulbs, in patches of uniform colour or mixed.

You can plant them in lawns. In this case, lift the turf, dig and loosen the soil to a depth of at least 20cm (8in) (the length of a spade). Plant your bulbs, cover with soil and replace the turf. Choose a spot where you won't mow, as the daffodil leaves must wither before cutting them. The bulb uses the leaves to rebuild itself and prepare the flowers for the following year. However, remember to cut the flowers as soon as they fade to avoid seed formation. This would unnecessarily exhaust the bulb.

Cut the leaves when they have turned yellow and apply fertiliser at that time, not before. Maintain regular watering during the growing season and then let the soil dry out once the foliage is mature.
