Very pretty and original aerial flowers. I really like them. Like Lynda, I recommend them again this year, the ones planted 2 years ago giving me complete satisfaction.

Description

Allium carinatum subsp. pulchellum 'Album' is a beautiful perennial bulb that blooms for 2 months in a "firework" display of white bells grouped in an umbel.

This ornamental garlic, also known as keeled garlic, is a bulbous plant, 40cm (16in) tall, with a glabrous and thick stem. It has medium green, deciduous, ribbon-like, flat leaves, 5 to 10mm wide. From July to August, inflorescences 7 to 10cm (3 to 4in) in diameter grow at the ends of the stems in loose, trailing umbels with numerous white bells. When cut, it emits a strong garlic smell.

Originating from temperate regions, Allium carinatum subsp. pulchellum 'Album' tolerates all light and well-drained soils, even dry, poor, gravelly, limestone ones. It prefers a sunny and warm location. Once established, it naturalises well. Pot cultivation is possible.

Keeled garlic is used in rock gardens, grouped in borders, or in containers. Pair it with graceful perennials such as alchemilla, stipa, carex, perennial geraniums, and heuchera for a unique display.

Planting and care

Plant Allium carinatum subsp. pulchellum 'Album' in autumn in light and well-drained soil in full sun, spaced 15 to 20cm (6 to 8in) apart and at a depth of 2 to 3 times the height of the bulb. For a beautiful mass effect, group the bulbs in sets of 7. Remove faded flowers and let it naturalise. Fertilise during flowering with a special bulb fertiliser. To prevent white rot, soak the bulbs in a solution of diluted bleach at 10%. It is possible to cultivate in pots using good, soft and well-drained compost.
