Description

Muscari 'Lindsay' is a hybrid variety that forms a clump of linear foliage in spring, from which short, rigid stems emerge bearing spikes of small blue-violet bells with a fine white border. The flowering, which is nectar-rich and slightly fragrant, occurs in March-April. This small bulb rests in the summer, unaffected by the heat.

Derived from Muscari armeniacum, 'Lindsay' is a hybrid belonging to the asparagaceae family. This small bulbous plant produces a basal rosette of very narrow, gutter-shaped, medium-green leaves. Each rosette produces 3 to 5 flower stalks on a mature and well-developed bulb. The 15 to 20 cm tall flower stalks, bear 20 to 40 small urn-shaped flowers, in a compact cluster 10 cm high. The white ring that encircles the "neck" of each small flower appears late. The flowers located towards the top of the cluster, which are fertile, are a slightly lighter blue. After pollination, triangular fruits form, containing numerous round, black seeds that germinate very easily.

Muscari is a small, undemanding plant that should be included due to its delightful range of colours, which can be more or less soft or vibrant. 'Lindsay' falls on the side of vibrant flowering, with its intense blue-violet colour. Its great resistance to cold, drought, and shade allows it to be used in many situations: in woodland, at the base of trees, as a border to highlight the design of a pathway, in a rockery with heathers, for example, or in Japanese-style gardens. It also grows very well in pots, on a windowsill or balcony. It is so accommodating that it will forgive forgotten watering and thrive in neglected or weekend gardens. Its blue flowers are very beautiful next to the yellow trumpets of daffodils, forget-me-nots, the fragrant clusters of early blue hyacinths (Blue Pearl, Delft Blue), or the pink and red cups of triumph tulips. Also, place muscari in clusters in a lawn. It multiplies rapidly in good, rich, and well-draining soil.

Planting and care

Plant your Lindsay muscari as soon as possible in a well-drained soil. Loosen the soil deeply. Plant at a depth of 8 cm (Bulbs should be covered with twice their height of soil). Space the bulbs 8 cm apart, making sure they do not touch each other. Choose a sunny exposure for better flowering. Muscari armeniacum is not demanding on the nature of the soil and perfectly hardy in all regions, even dry in summer. Divide the bulbs every 4 years at most. If you cultivate it in pots, you will need to water it regularly and provide it with fertiliser at the end of flowering so that the bulb replenishes its reserves.
